For those who followed my McAfee saga last month I have an update. I have finally received a response to the many help e-mails I forwarded to them between Dec 4 and 21. On Jan. 12 they responded. They did not address any of my help questions. Their e-mail simply advised me in 2 sentences that my 30 day warranty had expired so I couldn't have a refund (I requested the refund on Dec. 21, well within the warranty period). Luckily I returned the product to the store last month for a full refund. Notwithstanding my 9-10 e-mails last month, McAfee waited until my 30 day warranty was up before responding, only to tell me at that time "sorry, too late for a refund". Beware of these snake oil salesmen who call themselves McAfee. They are truly scoundrels.

I have sure been there. Wouldn't touch either of them. Reminds me to bump my last McAfee prob up.

I had Mcaffe when I first bought my Dell. It was pre-installed. I had updated/upgrade (a free one time deal) and thereafter had caused problems with M.S. Outlook (not express) . This was 2 years ago so I don't remember the details. I uninstalled it and all was better. After doing a reformat a year ago I did not put on the "virus" . Glad that I did that. Some techs at Dell said that it causes problems. I had Symantec Fax 9.0 and it would lock my puter and not work with all of the advertised features (like notify my pager) when I called Symantec a "tech" said; "I do not know what is wrong". I said; "that is okay, can you find out and call me back?" He said: "no, we can't do that." I returned the WinFax to the store. Symantec used to have a 30 day money back from place of purchase...not any more. I am not surprised.

Question: What virus software should I get that will work and not cause problems? I have become very careful about installing junk.

Thank you,
Scott

Hey Scott, I did a thread here called " A Guide to Anti Virus Programs", or something like that. It will explain all you need to know about them, how they are ranked, what virus are used for testing, etc... In reality, a free program called Inoculate IT is consistantly one of the best. Go HERE (http://antivirus.cai.com/) to get it, reboot, then go back and update it. It shouldn't cause you any problems or conflicts. Remember, to update it if you are like me and don't like to have programs access the net with out wanting it to... http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/wink.gif

Scott,I've been using InnoculateIt since last month following my McAfee debacle. I love it. You get regular updates that install quickly and easily and (unlike McAfee) the whole program just seems to run so smoothly. I'd have gladly paid for this software if required to. Give it a try I'm sure you'll have the same experience.

One last parting shot at McAfee in the form of a bad limerick

A fortnight ago I bought McAfee
Their tech support people just laughed at me
So I went to the store
Got a refund and more
Now Innoculate rules and I'm virus free

Sorry, couldn't resist
