more windoze probs...

I've been running the 'puter all day, opening and closing memory hungry programs (photoshop, illustrator, imageready, etc) when I go to launch illustrator from the quick launch and I get a message saying there is not enough memory. SO I close everything and check and I've only got 40-something % of my memory available - this is with all applications closed. I go to shutdown, and it won't shutdown, nor will it restart - the screen grays quickly, just a blink of grey, and no shutdwon. So I hit ctrl-alt-del to see what is running and see two things that I don't recognize:

hpzstatx and rnaap. Not sure what rnaap is - napster maybe? but I don't like the sound of hpzstatx. Sounds bad to me. Anybody know what it is? right now when I check I see it listed 3 time! what is going on? and where is my memory going? I ran virus, trojan and ad-aware scans, didn't find anything. I've got no idea why this is happening, so if anybody else does I'd love to hear it.

Hey sol

hummm.....have you installed any Hulet Packard products lately? Maybe a scanner or new printer?

Start/run/winconfig....

Look there for something running from startup. Hope this helps. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

yeah, I was wondering if that was something from my hp printer, but I don't find it in the startup items. When I search for it, it shows up as being in c/windows/system, but I can't find it. hopefully it is just some hp thingy that is doing no harm. What I can't figure out it what is eating my memory, and why the computer wouldn;t restart.

Hey Sol, are you up to date on Microsoft/Windows updates? There is some that pertain to the problem that you are having. Go here and follow the instructions, you may be surprised.

On those unknown files, do some file searches to find out what they are. I agree with downhill, if you have a HewlittPackard product, files beginning with HP usually are for it.

There is also a means of toggling off pretty much anything you want in 2000. I am not talking about the start up folder either. I can't remember, but you can go in there and decide exactly what runs at startup and what doesn't.

Control panel/administrative tools/computer management/services and applications/services select the application in question and right click on properties and turn it off. I tried to paste a picture in the previous post but it didn't work.

Ken, thanks (as always) for responding. Actually, I am pretty up to date on the windows updates, but I'm not sure which one you are refering to. I didn't see anything to fix a memory leak, which is the only thing that I can think of which would account for the way my ram evaporates over time.

thanks. 'course, I forgot to mention I'm running 98se

Hey sol, it could be the Win98SE Mapped Drives Shutdown Update- Win doesn't respond if a sig. # of mapped network drives are on your 'puter. It sems like I had the same problem and ended up DL this a 2nd time.
http://corporate.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
You can go here and click on detail for the same named update. It explains what is listed above and a another one is included called "Shut down supplement" involving Win. not responding on a shutdown/restart. I think this may help you. It will not hurt even if you have previously DL'd them. Give it aa try, you have nothing to lose.

Thanks again Ken. I don't think that I had that update. That sounds like it will solve the problem of not responding to shutdown/restart. Do you have any idea why I seem to lose memory as the computer runs? Sometimes if I leave the computer running for a while, all day or overnight, it will slow down significantly and I will have very little system resources left. Restarting solves this, but it seems to me that I should be able to run for much longer than that without problems. Is this a normal windows thing or do I have a problem?

Hey sol, yes, memory loss it natural with 9x, Win2000 is supposed to be more efficent. With 98SE, I find that I must reboot daily (I never turn it off unless I'm out of town) It is one of Windows well known problems.

Sol, your learning, thats what is important. We all must learn everyday. Did those DL updates straighten out your problem?

hard to tell if they cleared up the problem, as it was intermitant. Everything works well right now though.
