Zone Alarm Vs Gator

Hi, I was just reading a thread that states the Gator program is spyware. Which is a shame cause I find it highly useful http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/frown.gif. If I use ZoneAlarm and have all its out going transmission blocked would I of negated it's evil purpose? If not is there a program similiar to Gator that is safe to use?
