Why is it or What is it, that with cable systems, that Zonealarm will cause the person to not be able to surf, out of the blue, even though everything,TCP/IP, NIC etc, seems in order. Most people recieve a good IP, but cannot get out of there system and of course can't be pinged.Cleary,a port is shut off, maybe 67. But I don't understand because sometimes it effects e-mails as well. And you have to shut it down or in extreme cases uninstall it ot get these sytems back-up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe it setup right in your system the frist
time.Try uninstalling it then reinstall it.
See if that helps.I run it on all three of
my computers and don't have any problems.
It may be uncapatibal with some other software you are useing.Plus try changing
its settings and see if that helps. Goodluck

Never had a problem with ZoneAlarm. Check the site to make sure you have the newest version. When you first use ZA and open a program it asks you if you want to let this program connect to the internet (pop-up window). If you say NO it wont let you out.

I had way too many problems with Zone Alarm. Would not let me connect to a lotta stuff. I use Hack Tracer now, much much better.

if you are using win98se "ICS" you must have the levels set to MEDIUM only for "INTERNET" and LOW for "LOCAL".

9. Does ZoneAlarm 2.0 support Internet Connection Sharing or NAT setups?

ZoneAlarm does work with ICS that runs on the same computer. These include Internet Connection Sharing on Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 as well as proxy software. ZoneAlarm installed on a computer with NAT software does not work, ZoneAlarm works perfectly well on computers using NAT addresses.

If you install ZoneAlarm on the ICS computer, set the Security level to medium. ZoneAlarm will still provide application control to the computer running ICS, but not protect the network. You can then install ZoneAlarm on the other computers and all the features will work properly. Alternatively you can add your computers IP addresses to the trusted local Zone on the ICS machine, and leave the local security level to medium or low, and it should work fine.

Prey521,

HackTracker cost a few $ & so does BlackIce Defender.

¿Have you ever used BID? and, if so; ¿is it better than, less than or equal to, HackTracker?

I used BID but when I did some security updates from Microsoft site BID stopped working!

Been using ZoneAlarm but am trying HackTracer now.

haze, two things:

1. BID is now a 2.1.cn release number...if you don't have it, you might download it. Their most recent updates you for fixing those type problems...and others.

I've had many problems with BID getting disabled, on it's own. I've read info/reasons on this, on their Web site...don't remember details.

2. Would be interested in your feedback concerning HackTracker.

chacmool,

Been using Hack Tracer for only a few days and I do like it. Easy to set up like ZoneAlarm and have tested it 3 sites that are designed to try and probe (hack) my machine. All tests returned the same info. They could get no info (Stealth). The one thing I realy like about Hack T is that I can do a trace/WhoIs on the IP# that tried to access my PC right from the Hack T program. No need to open another program.

The only thing I'm not sure of yet is adding to "Trusted IP's". I keep getting a warning related to a RoadRunner IP.

haze, thanks for feedback.

If you would...post back w/update.

I'm thinking of going for the $$.

Would still be interested...for the $$
¿BID?
¿ZoneAlarm Pro?
¿HackTracker?

Of course, ZoneAlarm (for free) is presently winning, from all reports/sites I've read.

They sucked people in for free, built a large user base and now want cash. If only 10% or less buy the pro=winner! Pretty good marketing move.

With ZoneAlarm you must set it to medium security to let windows services run..eg bootp/dhcp lan side..
Or get ZoneAlarm Pro were you get to configure inbound and outbound ports, also has settings for ICS/NAT for your lan. ICS/NAT was not supported under old versions of ZA

Well i run zone alarm and BID and have no problems.

Ok with BLACKICE you have to open services to Bootp/DHCP (port 67.68)or you will not be able to lease addresses to your LAN. Meaning editing firewall.ini file also disabling internal adapter..Also adding your lan addresses to your trusted list..

All versions of ZoneAlarm before ZoneAlarm Pro do not support any form of Translation running in full stealth mode. Meaning you have to run with windows services exposed to the net..Thats it! read the lit....
