Very Slow Internet Wireless Adaptor

Hey Guys

Been having some very slow internet and gaming since i bought this new Wireless adaptor for £40. My old one was much faster and cheaper so it's stands to ground that my settings are awful. I am not much of a techy person and have been really struggling with trying to speed it up!

My Wireless internet adaptor is 802.11 N/Draft Wireless USB Adaptor

My router is NETGEAR RANGEMAX™ WIRELESS-N ROUTER WITH BUILT-IN DSL MODEM DG834N

Both things mean nothing to me and I would really appreciate if someone could help me out with Threshold settings etc to speed it up.

My mum is on an ethernet cable donwstairs and my bro on wireless upstairs.

What adapter does bro use? If he is not using a N adapter then the access point will drop out of N mode for you too.

Not sure it has 2 antenna aerial so this is not very helpful as he lost the packaging and i have no idea how to find out. When his computer is off it is still really really slow. Is it still dropping out ?
