This sounds as if the computer is not recognizing the device, possibly
because the USB port is not working ("If the Wireless Network Monitor is
disabled or the Adapter is not connected, then the icon will be gray.")
Do other USB devices work in the same USB jack?
Does Device Manager show any problems (yellow exclamation point)?
When you ran the Linksys install CD, what happened when the instructions
told you to connect the device (you didn't have the device connected all
of the time, did you)?
Do you get any other options on right-clicking or double-clicking the icon?

Hello Lem,
Here is what happened:
1. I can plug a thumb drive into the UBS port and save and than open Word
documents using that same ubs port
2. I uninstalled the Linksys adapter software and reinstalled
3. The adapter was not plugged in while installing files
4. The Linksys Setup wizard loaded the files on the PC okay
5. I plugged in the Adapter when told to do so
6. When I go to the Device Manager I can see Linksys under Network adapters
and it says it is working properly and there are no yellow question marks
6. However, while in the Linksys Set up Wizard I get a dialog box that asks
if I want to use the EASY SETUP or SKIP when I click on SKIP nothing happens.
7. On the lower toolbar the Wireless Icon (box) is now Green.
8. When I place the curser on it it says Scanning
9.When I right click on the Windows Wireless Icon it syas Wireless
Connection 18 Not Connected.
10. When I right click it says Windows Cannot Configure this Wireless
Connection.
Hmmmm....
Thanks for your response and your timne.

I don't know where you stand now after trying some or all of the various
suggestions, but as of when you posted these 10 points, it looks like
things are working properly. If the Linksys icon is green and
"scanning," then the Linksys utility is controlling the adapter. In
this case, the Linksys utility will turn off WZC because only one or the
other of these utilities should be active.
You should be able to open the Linksys utility and set it to be disabled
in favor of WZC, if that's what you want.
Are you sure that there is an active wireless access point in range?

At this point, you are supposed to configure your wifi connection instead of
"skipping". Follow Linksys wizard.

That looks like you've installed/removed USB wifi adapter more than 15
times. That's why it says Wireless Connection 18

This is normal because Linksys software is controlling your wifi connection.
Is your wireless network SSID hidden?

Forget the Linksys Setup Wizard. As long as you have installed the
driver, you don't need the Wizard.
You are making this much more difficult than it should be.
First of all, do you actually have a working wireless access point or
wireless router within range of your computer? Preferably, test your
laptop with the WUSB54GSC in the same room as the wireless router.
Next, make sure that the wireless router is:
(a) actually using wireless-G (and not a, b, or n);
(b) configured with a non-default SSID that you will recognize and is
also configured to broadcast the SSID; and
(c) is set to use *no* encryption, MAC filter, IP address filtering, or
other security devices.
Were you able successfully to make all of those settings?
Now, when you turn on the laptop, does the Linksys utility icon turn
green and start scanning for wireless networks? Does it find the
router? What, exactly, happens?
What happens when you right-click on the Linksys icon? You should see a
menu with 2 options, one to turn the Linksys monitor on/off and the
other to use Windows wireless configuration. If you select the option
to use Windows, double-click the Windows wireless icon and you should
get the "Choose a wireless network" screen. Do you see the SSID of your
router? Click "connect".
If the above worked, go back to the router and enable WPA2 encryption
(do *not* use WEP). The next time you see "Choose a wireless network"
and select your router's SSID, you'll be asked to enter the password
that you set in the router.
This is all explained in the Linksys User Guide, which is available
either on the CD that came with the adapter or downloadable from the
Linksys website.
If you are still having trouble, please answer *all* of the above questions.

If that's the case, don't use Linksys to manage your wifi connection. Right
click Linksys icon in the system tray then click Let Windows manage my
wireless network (this may not be the exact message). Then use Windows WZC
to connect to your SSID.
