hi guys i currently upgraded my virgin media broadband to the xl package which is 20 mb broadband, which i thought, this is going to be super fast but low anf behold its super slow
so i do a speed test and get this result
http://www.speedtest.net/result/408329011.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
but when im downloading my speed is usually around 250 KB/s with an upload speed of 74. now surely this is a speed you would get with say a 2 mg broadband right? so what am i doing wrong to get this sort of crapp download speed
i have no idea when it comes to tweaking my bband speed so i have listed my results from the optimizer i have. Dont know if this will help or not but here it is lol

thanks for your time
With a 20Mbit connection, you may want to increase your TCP Receive Window to 513920.
That said, your download will depend not only on your speed, but the server(s) that you're connected to. If the speed test indicates you're downloading with 20Mbits/s, that usually means you have that bandwidth available on your end of the connection.
Have you tried downloading large files from a fast server, like a MS service pack, or a linux distro ?

no i havent tried any of those yet, do you think that would be my best bet in using a site that has a faster servers. ive only ever used the the p2p programs like utorrent and bitcomet. must be where im going wrong then.
do you know of any good fast servers where i could try out my speed thanks

Never run two p2p programs at the same time, even if you have a 100mbps line.
Your home grade modem/router cannot handle the many hundreds of simultaneous connections demanded by these programs, and your upload bandwidth will be choked up. When upload bandwidth is choked, download speed falls to the same speed of your upload speed.
Run only one p2p program. Set the following limits into it:
Global number of connections - 100
Global upload speed - 60% of what you get from your ISP.

ok so i know my speed in a p2p prog is extremely poor. So i decided to download straight from the web pages and came up with this speed
now is the reason my speed is poor in the p2p progs because of other slow servers now necessarily just down to my internet speed?

Like I have said. You have not set limits to your p2p program and so it is opening too many connections and uploading to many many people in your p2p network, choking up your upload bandwidth, and causing download speed to fall.
Set limits into your p2p program as I have suggested and run only one program at any one time.

Did you set a static LAN IP address for your comp and then port forward your router to this static LAN IP address?

Do a tracert to www.yahoo.com and post.
To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.
A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>
tracert www.yahoo.com
and press enter key
When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.
Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

High and uneven ping times at the modem in hop 1.
Power off the modem for 10 minutes and relocate it away from ALL other electrical devices.
Then power on and do another tracert to see if ping times at hop 1 fall below 10ms.
