I just had Verizon Fios installed, making the switch from Comcast. Its absolutely amazing, however...

I have never used routers before, because I host a variety of game servers, and routers always seemed to complicate the problem. Some of the games are rather old, ie Turok 2, and even with the few failed attempts at port forwarding etc, I still run into problems.

I would like to totally disable my router, however I know this isnt possible so, here is my question.

I would like to disable NAT altogether, and have the external IP address assigned right to my computer. Right now it is reading the ip that the router has assigned to it, 192.x...while my router is getting the external ip.

Is there anyway I can pass right though the router and have my computer network card be assigned the external ip?

And yes, I know this isnt the secure way to do things, however security is my least priority, as this is simply a gaming pc, and my other pc's with important information are only plugged into the network for quick updates, and that is very rare.

Sorry, fogot to say OS etc.

Windows Xp Pro SP2
Netgear FA311 10/100 NIC
Crappy Verizon Router Model number MI424-WR

YOu can put the router into dmz mode you will still have the nat private address ,but it will disable the port forwarding. The box i game on i use a software firewall to do the ports ,and securty the address of the machine in dmz that way don't have to worry about ports ,and also it's somewhat still secured.

Thanks mccoffee,

I have done that, and can host any of my newer games without issue, but its some of the older ones without support that are giving me problems.

I would really like to know if there is a way to diable NAT altogether, and have the ip go straight to my PC, much like the way a modem handles it.

if the modem is in bridge mode it should go strieght though ,or just call the isp and ask for a pure modem. Dmz does open all the ports up if ports are still block ,or not going though it could be on verisons end. I know some isp's block higher numer ports ,and you as the consumer will have to the chnage the port of that game in the game options if it has it.

There are a couple of posts over at dslreports on bridging the actiontec fios boxes.
