Problems with 2wire gateway

Hi, i'm new here..I use AT&T's DSL service @ 6mbps (advertised speed)

previously i had dsl also, but used the provided modem + my own lynksys router.

ever since i switched to the 2wire, it seems to disconnected/crash very often whenever i download or use bittorrents. Last night i also saw a weird computer connected to my home network(shouldn't be there), but i have no idea how anyone would know the wireless password to the router.

recently my cousin moved in with me, and i was wondering if i can split the bandwidth so no one hogs all bandwidth....& protection against virus through the network

any tips on using teh 2wire gateway would be really appreciated
