Run the internet connection sharing wizard.
For more reliable performance though...I recommend a wireless router. This also gives you the added benefit of firewall protection..instead of having your PC plugged directly into a modem and having a public IP address..which is scary.

ok i tried that and it told me that my wireless adapter is off so I went to my device manager which says it is enabled, also I have not been able to figure out how to get my wired connection to produce a wireless signal. would I have to bridge the connection? Or does it have to do with my local connection properties which says to allow other computers to use this connection? But I have done that but I see no
changes to my wireless connection

You need to set up ad hoc wireless connection between that desktop computer and labtop first (that's why you saw disconnected wireless network if this wireless link is not up), then enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop computer to share Internet. Hopefully it helps..

ok I will try that next, also another question, the ad hoc connection must be setup before I enable connection through the desktop? And for the ad hoc, wat determines the host conputer?

Regarding "WAN Miniport IPX"....that gets a yellow mark when something in your network drivers gets corrupted. I'd download 'n install the latest NIC drivers, see if you can remove the WAN Miniport IPX entry and let it settle in again.

I'd disable your firewire port (1394) if you're not using it.

The host computer is look at for the gateway out and DNS..that's now it's seen by other clients.
