spybot-search and destroy

adaware se (lavasoft)

Make SURE you d/l the real deal versions, there are a host of websites that spoof those names and just entice you to install a wad more of spyware.

Run a quality antivirus program...such as Kaspersky or NOD32
If you must use a free one....Antivir

AVG AntiSpyware (NOT their antivirus)
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-spyware-and-anti-rootkit (it's a trial..so after a few scans 'n days.uninstall)

Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spybot.html

SuperAntispyware

Which is the best free anti ad/spyware program out there

TCP Winsock repair utility..rebuilds the winsock files and tcp stack to virgin fresh..because some malware infects with with DNS rediret injections.

Got distracted with a long support call..back to thread.

In using the above tools...you'll get some idea on if your system is infected with one of the bad adware trojans..such as Spysheriff, Spyfalcon, Smitfraud, one of the Virtumundo variants, etc...and armed with the information of what one you have..you can get specifiv removal tools such as SDFix, Vundufix, Smitrem, etc.

It sounds as if you want to block ads on webpages? If so install the extension YoS suggested for Firefox and install IE7 Pro (http://www.ie7pro.com) for Internet Explorer 7 to block ads.
