View Full Version : Static WAN IP & Bellsouth DSL

This is true DSL, phone line plugs into a Netopia Gateway (Modem/Router Combo). I looked at the WAN Setup on this and it is set for PPPoE. However, this office is paying for, and we confirmed with Bellsouth, they have 5 Static IP's.
Of course, as currently configured, the IP address does change from time to time, (power outages, etc.), and just gets a random Bellsouth IP, not one of this office's Static IP's.
My question is, to set them up using their static IP, wouldn't I just go into their gateway and configure it for Static IP vs. PPPoE.
My only concern here is that on a lot of the Bellsouth Modems and Gateways, the only WAN choices are often PPPoE or BRIDGED. I am not at this location now to look and see if STATIC IP is an option for the WAN side on this device.
Thanks!!!

All of the SNET/SBC business DSL accounts we have...(most of which are on Netopia or Speedstreams (they sometimes ship the 2Wire gateways..which I spit on and throw in the trash and replace with a Speedstream)...the static IP is tied in with their PPPoE account. So we just set the routers to PPPoE...and the router gets the first IP of their block via DHCP. It's sort of like a DHCP reservation..except instead of binding the reserved IP to a MAC address, they bind it to your user/pass. The Netopias support IP mapping..so you can map the additional static IPs to other internal devices.
Verizon (up here anyways) does their static IP accounts just by setting up the WAN interface of the router with the static info..no PPPoE involved.

Well I know that with this Netopia set to PPPoE they are getting random dynamic IP's, not one of their 5 static IP's I just wondered if anyone knew if the Netopia would have a setting for Static IP. I'm thinking it does not, in which case it would have to be set for Bridged, then a router connected which could be set to Static IP, no PPPoE involved.
The IP mapping you refer to, are you talking about "pinholes". This Netopia does not have that functionality. Currently, for remote access to their DVR, in the remote app, they enter the current IP of the Netopia, and I have setup port forwarding to the static LAN IP on the DVR. This works, but whenever the WAN IP changes, the remote app needs to have the new IP entered. Kind of a pain.

No..pinholes is Netopias term for port forwarding.
IP mapping...you assign the public IP to a WAN interface of another router or server...with the appropriate subnet mask, remote/default gateway, and DNS entries....and link it to one of the LAN ports of your Netopia..and it will basically publish that public IP outside of its firewall..sort of like DMZ.
I would call Bellsouth and have them troubleshoot the static IP issue. Since they are under SBC/AT&T...I'm assuming down there in FL it's the same standards as up here in the north...but...with all the changes doing on with AT&T..never know..maybe you do need to plug in the static IP info. I have one of those spare Netopias at the office...can take a peek at it there and see if there's a static WAN section.
