Hi, I'm new to this forum so forgive me if this topic has been covered already but I haven't been able to find any threads that answer my questions.

So I'm doing some renos and as a result, there will be a 100+ feet cable run originating from the original outdoor source to my basement. Once it gets to my basement, the cable gets split into 3 with my 5-2400MHz splitter. One output goes to my cable modem, another goes into my HD cable box (I have digital cable not satellite), and the last one remains analog into a small TV.

My question is, do you recommend getting a signal amplifier? Because I'm worried that the signal strength will have weakened significantly as I will be connecting my HD box and modem to the split signals and I want to ensure the best HD picture and internet signal.

I know that the HD thing doesn't really fit this forum, but my internet is connected to the split signal as well.

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to Speedguide!!!

It really depends on how strong the signal is coming into the house. How long is the cable drop from the pole or pedestal to your house? If the signal is low then yes get an amplifier FROM YOUR CABLE COMPANY. Where I work they are only twenty dollars and we install them for you, also if it ever breaks we replace them.

Also I would get two 2-way splitters instead of a 3-way splitter. Same amount of signal loss but a 3-way is unbalanced and generally not good to use for cable modems. You always want to keep your cable modem on the first 2-way splitter coming into the house and tv on the other side. Another good thing to do is ground the second splitter to make sure no voltage makes it's way back to the modem otherwise it can cause your modem to lose sync.
