View Full Version : WHR-HP-G54 DNS settings problem
I have several-HP-G54 units. I'm trying to use one with a Motorola Model
U10C018 cable modem on Charter Communication cable internet. (system config
data follows)
WHR-HP-G54 has been set up using opendns.com
DNS1(Primary) 208.67.222.222 (Manual)
DNS2(Secondary) 208.67.220.220 (Manual)
Somehow the system (which part I don't know) is defaulting to the Charter
DNS
DNS3 66.169.221.10 (Via DHCP)
DNS4 68.113.206.10 (Via DHCP)
I've used these with Charter systems before with success but not with the
U10C018 cable modem.
Contacted Buffalo support and while they have been very helpful in the past
they are unable to explain what's happening or how to address the problem.
I should mention that we had to manually set the MAC Address
00:04:5A:75:D3:5B of the modem in the
WHR-HP-G54 set up process otherwise the connection to the internet was
flaky.
This would not be a problem but I have my grand kids using the net work and
want the added protection I can get from opendns.com.
I currently have the system set up as 'open' and will lock down access once
the DNS problem is fixed.
FWIW I'm in the 'toy' mode and can try most anything this group thinks might
help.
TIA

It sounds to me that you configure your router correctly, but you
configured your network card to use another DNS server. Go to start then
run. In the box type in cmd, and click ok. You will see a black screen
come up. At the prompt, type: ipconfig /all
Copy what is displayed, and come back paste here so I can see the results.
hope it helps. Reinhard

Thanks for the response:
Finally got the DNS problem working. (btw I was unable to cut and paste from
the cmd, ipconfig /all window)
Seems there was an intermittent updating of data of my dynamic IP to
opendns.com's system. The cause being my computer was not on line all the
time.
see http://opendns.marc-hoersken.de for data on what I'm using.
While this is a solution it requires me to keep at lease one machine (in
addition to the Buffalo wifi) on line and powered up.
My question now is there any way to run this application/process from the
WHR-HP-G54 device itself?
Also is there any practical way to block the DHCP from accessing the DNS3
and DNS4 from my ISP? Better yet to have the DHCP system access ONLY
opendns.com?
I ask as I have grand and foster kids visiting and I like the option of
controlling access without having to mess with the individual computers.
(that option has proven to be problematic as these kids seem to be computer
savvy enough to by pass most of what we've done with regard to filtering
content at the machine level)
Regards and TIA

i am glad that you have work it out... To answer you question, there
are certain router's firmware that are able to contact OpenDns and other
DNS service to update your information.
I have the same buffalo router, I don't remember if the buffalo's
router have that options. I have updated my Buffalo to a dd-wrt firmware
and it has that option. You can take a look at www.dd-wrt.com. If you
decide to upgrade the firmware, have someone with computer skills to
upgrade the router. Upgrading the firmware can cause damage to the
router if improperly installed.
You don't have to worry about DHCP connecting to other server if
the router is properly set up.
hope it helps.
