View Full Version : Cable Modem speed issue
I have just switched from DSL to cable connection for service. I had DSL at 3Mbps and went to Road Runner's 7Mbps. I am browsing and downloading slower with this connection than before. I called Tech support and they were no help to me. They sent a tech and he never even checked anything but did a speed test on my computer. I download files at 15Kbps and cannot run online games. I've reset the modem and checked all connections. Sometimes my speed test shows 600Kbps but then a minute later will show 90Kbps. I need some assistance please.

Cable modem is different from DSL. You need to call your ISP and register the MAC address of your cable modem so that they can provision it. In DSL, the service is restricted to the registered phone number. In Cable, the service is restricted to a single registered MAC address of the cable modem.
I am using the modem Road Runner brought over.

I am using the modem Road Runner brought over.
Call your ISP and read to them the MAC number that is printed at the rear or bottom of your cable modem.
I called them yesterday to confirm the MAC address and they have said it was correct.

Post your TCP Analyzer report.

After I reboot should I post another analyzer report?
Post another TCP Analyzer report and also do some speed tests.
Here it is after I rebooted:

Packet losses at hop 4. May be due to your end as ping times at the modem in hop 1 are irregular.
I would first scan for possible malware in the comp.
Clean comp with CCleaner and then deep scan with:
SpyBot
Ad-Aware 2007
Super-antispyware
OK, I will use those then post results again on here.
This is after I did all the cleaning and deep scans:

Ping times at hop 1 have lowered but still uneven.
Turn off power to your modem for 10 mins. Place it in a location a few feet away from ALL other electrical devices. Do not coil up any signal or power cables.
