I play a game called Runescape, its an online game. Basically in Runescape is a mini-game called castle wars. One of the key aspects to the game is picking a flag up when it is dropped from a player dieing, u need to be the first person to pick the flag up, and have to sometime beat numerous other players who also tweak their connection to be as fast as possible, would someone be able to help me in tweaking my connection SPECIFICALLY FOR ONLINE GAMING eg runescape. and offer me advice on what MTU to use, as i have heard that for online gaming different MTU's should be used to what is normally advised by people. For extra information i am from England, My isp is British Telecommunications and i have a 2wire router with PPPOA DSL connection. I often get 5.5mbs-6mbs download on speedtest.net, with a ping varying from 75-95 and a upload speed of 300-400kbs, so would any1 be able to help me, and give me advice on what to do

These are my results for TCP analzyer - I need to optimize these specifically to ONLINE GAMING SETTINGS, Also there are many ppl that change their public Ip address, i was wondering why this works? i myself have done this and found it does help u pick flag up better, and numerous other ppl do this. The trick is getting a good ip, eg low numbers at the end apparently. But i want to clarify this and see what changing ip and having low numbers as last number actually does. becuase u have to be the first to grab the flag, i think this game is based more on how good your connection is, than ur net speed, but that shud come into account i think

Changing your IP won't do anything unless you're being hit by tons of bots/spyware.

Run a couple spyware scans like spybot and super antispyware.

As for your settings, do a test at www.speedtest.net to the recommended server.

i cant explain it, but changing ip does do something, i dont understand it fully but trust me it does, many people do it including myself, however i was just wondering if there was anything else i can do to maximize my connection for online gaming, any settings such as changing MTU etc?

No it really does nothing, its 90% perception, try what I suggested in lines 2 and 3 of my post though...

Well your ping is on the high side for such a short distance, are you playing on a server close to you?

do you know the server address you play on?

i play on Uk servers, i dont know how to get the adresses for them, if you want you can see for yourself.

go on www.runescape.com <-- then go play, choose detail, and you will see that there are a fair few Uk servers, i dont know how to get the addresses for the servers, because you simply get onto the servers through runescape.com, could you help ?

Hmmm, I see jolt hosts a few, heh, I've found those to get lots of lag complaints in the past on other games.

I'd say you're just SOL on getting a better ping to them.

sol, whats that lol, so is there really not much else i can do? are my settings such as MTU correct, because i hear so much that it varies from router to router and also different mtus for different purposes, eg surfing online shud have a different MTU to online gaming, which is what i do mostly..

i wanna keep this thread alive, because most of my questions didn't get answered, i also wondered, i hear that you can 'speed up java applets' since runescape runs of java, wouldn't this technically speed runescape up, or decrease the lagg, i know a few things which ive done which i have found to speed it up but i was wondering what else i can do. what else can i do to maximize or optimize my runescape/online gaming experience.
