I'm having a Broadband connection(not PPOE) up to 1Mbps speed as advertised by my provider. It was hooked to a telephone where I can make calls and surf the net simultaenously.

My operating system is Windows XP SP2.

My computer performance is average or I say slow. I think it greatly affect my internet speed. I have AMD Sempron processor 3200+ (1.8GHz) and 256MB SDRAM.

I have approximately 15-20 programs installed and only MS office, Nero 8 and Adobe Acrobat are the heavy programs. When browsing the net, I usually open Mozilla Firefox, notepad, Internet download manager(IDM) and winamp only to optimize the memory.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my web browser.

Kaspersky Internet Security is my antivirus at the same time a web, mail and file antivirus as well as anti spam, privacy control and firewall. I think I'm safe when browsing the internet.

I haven't tweak my pc since but I planned to because when I download some large file/data(100MB up to 5GB) using IDM(internet download manager), I get an average speed of 140-160 KB/sec. Is this normal?
When I'm not downloading or browsing the net, I get around 800-950 KB/sec from an online bandwidth tester. Why the speed is not the same when downloading and idle?

I'm planning to buy Speedconnect XP from cbs-soft.com as an all-in-one, simple and user-friendly tool in tweaking pc for maximizing the internet speed.
Is this a good idea or manual tweaking is better?

I can say that my slow computer greatly affect the internet speed.

I provide you all the neccessary infos and sorry if I made it too long.

Here's the result:

RAM is the first thing that jumps out on me. Minimum I recommend for light ==> average XP users is 512 megs. RAM is so cheap strive for 1 gig if you can.

Replace Adobe Acrobat (uninstall fully) with Foxit PDF.

Good to see Firefox....great to see Kaspersky...excellent product.

Naturally we recommend our own tweaking utility...the Speedguide TCP Optimizer. It's free also...very easy to use, run it....adjust the slide bar to your actual speed..follow the recommended settings.

Thanks for the tip. Im going to replace it soon.

Regarding my RAM size(256Mb), Im not planning any upgrade by now because my PC(HP brand) did perform well. Its only 3 yrs old but yet havent experience any crash or problems.. Im truly amazed.

My main purpose is to overwork and push my pc to the limit for peak performance while retaining its manufacturers spec.

I want to squeeze all of its memory available and working the processor to the max. I want to know its limit..

Any handy little advise will do.

After reboot, post your new TCP Analyzer Report.

Kaspersky Internet Security

You're using KIS. This is why your TCP Window stuck at 32768. It's blocking your TCP Window.

Remember : JUST USE ANTIVIRUS in KIS to see if your TCP Window changes.

I disabled temporarily the KIS firewall and other applications except its antivirus
but still it remains the same.

I suspect it is the combination of KIS with the recent Microsoft patch KB941644 that is limiting adjustments to your TCP Window:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a766242-2342-4fa0-9b66-8953c54a2211&displaylang=en

Try going to Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs to uninstall this patch. Reboot comp and run TCP Optimizer and see if your TCP Window will change.

If needed, you can download and install this patch again at the above link.
