Sometimes I get the following error randomly, but not specific to any website. Here I posted the error for this website as an example, but it is not anything to do with this website since I get this error for other websites too. However, when I click "Try again", the page will load within few seconds as usual. I wonder what tweak I have to make at my end. It is Vista Ultimate with DSL behind a router.

The connection has timed out

The server at forums.speedguide.net is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

What make/model DSL "modem" do you have? Do you have another router behind that? If the DSL modem is actually a combo modem/router...and you put another router behind it..you can end up with some conflicts and performance issues.

Also try emptying your temp internet files/cache, ensure your PC is regularly cleaned of ad/spy/malware, and no unnecessary toolbars installed in your browser.

Sometimes malware screws up the tcp stack/winsock files...in which case running a "repair" utility fixes a lot of issues..

I have most often run into time-out issues when the isp is having issues w/ its dns. To determine if the isp is the source of troubles do traceroutes to varios web addresses. You'll see time-outs occur at a certain point in the route. If the time-outs occur initially (gateway) then see above post as it's a modem-router issue.

This is a simple DSL modem from the SWbell, model Alcatel 1000 ADSL. This is not a combo, so no redundancy with my router, which is ASUS WL500W.

I don't install any tool bar from other websites, such as Google and so on...

I will clear everything as you said. Hope that will solve it.

Ok, I do that tracert command whenever I get that error to find out where it is. What I saw is that, all the hops are passing without any time out.

Whenever I get a tme out error, if I click "try again", it will load the page very fast. So, is it anything to do with my side? Any registry tweak?

Any registry tweak?

Have you tried the winsock repair?
