Is it best to d/l this now or wait until tomorrow and use auto updates? If I use auto updates tomorrow when every one else is it might take forever. What do you all recommend doing? Have any of you d/l'd it already? If so, any issues?
Thanks

Give it time and wait, see how the masses find it, next week it should be fast to get.

If it's your home machine...you're can more easily install it and see if there are any issues. If you're thinking about deploying it in a business environment..I'd urge what any network admin would do...."wait"...test on a box or two first to see if your primary line of business applications have any issues with it, other critical network functions, remote access, printing, scanning, antivirus, security software/firewalls, etc etc. No need to rush out and install it nilly willy on your entire network...and then find some major issues with it that creates a major emergency for you to uninstall it and restore all the workstations.
Although you can count the hours until it's out....if you're feeling the need to rush and get it right now...make sure it's from a trusted source...things like leaked service packs are favorite sources of sabotage....by people who like to tweak things with malware.

I've got the full legit service pack if he wants it direct from MSDN... 100% trusted source! :thumb:
But the pack is fine... the only thing you need to make sure is all your files including reg keys are all under Admin permissions. Its known that Spybot's immune feature along with a few odd ball programs like that has changed some key's rights and caused the pack to stop at certain points. UOD found this out the hard way but figured out a fix..which I've got the two quick fix files for that problem if anyone runs into it.
Unless of course you want to re set each key it finds manually lol

So sava, you suggest disabling spybot immunize?

you have to uninstall the whole thing I guess prior to running SP3 installer... at least this is what caused UOD's problem when he was trying to install it.
installing it afterward again isn't a big deal anyway..

When it's out? I downloaded it two months ago.
Every one I know that loaded it seems to think it's a pretty stable program.

You did not install the final version, you installed a Release Candidate w/ bugs.
I grabbed it from MSDN a few days ago, installed it last night and no issues w/ Spybot at all.

yeah it may or may not have issues... the main thing that might cause the issue is a program such as Spybot that rewrites the permissions of files or reg keys which if certain ones are used with the service pack it will not write since it needs Admin permission.
Upon hearing UOD explain it to me that next day after he had to fool with the installer for 3hours plus find a work around to finish the install I was pretty surprised that it caused that issue.
Here is a link to the stand alone installer!

It should also be picked up on WindowsUpdate when you manual run a search.

Interesting article..
Microsoft will make its Service Pack 3 (SP3) update for Windows XP available for download today. The move may convince some firms that XP is still viable enough to let them skip Vista and hold out for its successor instead. XP SP3 can be downloaded from Microsoft’s web site today and will be pushed out to XP users via the Windows Automatic Update service later in the summer. The update includes all patches and fixes released since SP2 in 2004, but does not include Internet Explorer 7.
The update is likely to be deployed quickly in enterprises, according to experts, as it enables IT departments to ensure client systems are fully patched, without having to roll out a myriad of separate fixes. It also brings extra security in the form of support for Network Access Protection (NAP), a technology introduced in Vista. NAP is a policy enforcement mechanism to ensure systems comply with security requirements. SP3 may, however, convince some IT leaders that staying on XP is preferable to a potentially costly Vista migration.

Far as I recall...the "immunize" feature of Spybot only adds known bad sites to the restricted list of your browser...from a database that's updated.
They have a "Teatimer" option which seals more registry permissions.
I never touched Spybot when I tried it.

I'll try to get UOD to chim in on this thread later cause I'm sure he could explain what happened to him in more detail and how he searched the cause to revolve from spybot or something similar.

1.5 was a bit buggy...I continued using 1.4 for a while...
...but they released a 1.52..and that's been rock solid for me on many a mixed environment.

interesting info
In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and SP3 both Windows XP and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web.
To help protect customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to the web. I just posted that.. :wth:
and it only has to do with Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS)
so don't worry about it.... so far 53 systems loaded with it and not a single problem :thumb:

Yup I have a few clients on Dynamics.
You generally don't find out about compatibility issues until other make themselves guinea pigs and make the leap. Over the next month or so..the list of issues will start to grow. And over the next few months after that...developers will release patches for their products to make them work better with XP sp3.

Glad I waited then. I might wait for a month before I install it.
It may or may not be related however. I did have Xp 3 rc2 on this laptop prior to the final release of SP3.
I attribute it to a **** antivirus program.
I would wait however. I have many machines to deploy SP3 on and won't be doing it anytime in the very near future.

I just went to windows update and noticed that SP3 can be loaded from there and the size of it is 66.9MB. Is it safe to d/l this without issues?

Have you read the posts in this thread?
For most home users..it should be OK. Might want to clone an image of your PC first, just in case.
In the work place..you may want to check compatibility first.

Yes, I have read the posts. What is your point? Before I started up the thread again there have been around 6 days before anyone said anything again about SP3.

Updated my post because I forgot two things that might help people.
I have comodo software firewall.. I right clicked the icon and exited the program.. Make sure you exit out completely like that.
The other thing that I did noticed.. and I'll have to update my post.. was that it was a very slow update.. took a while.. My systems is totally defraged
and shiny clean.. and I have a lot of happy hard drive space.
also not a lot of things running on this client.. so be aware of that..
2 times.. I thought that the updater was "frozen" but it was not.. just took a while.
Spybot seems ok as well.. however I do not have "immunize" or "tea timer" enabled... version 1.5.2.20 / and updated to
detection 05/07/2008 after the install of XP SP3 :thumb:

On a fresh install of SP2 it doesn't take no where near the same amount of time as it does with a system that has its work out over a period of time. I've been marking the numbers down on the amount of systems I'm deploying SP1 for Vista and SP3 for XP and I'm at 74 for XP SP3...and 90% of these are from systems that haven't been reloaded since they were purchased and I haven't had a problem yet. Same with SP1.. I've loaded 37 and the only issue I've had was with a laptop with older drivers that needed to be updated first. I ended up slaving the drive out of it to back up files then I reloaded it just fine after loading new drivers.
Always best to back up just in case.
anyone try SP3 on XP64 yet ?
wonder if i should try a slipstream of this on a fresh install since i need to activate in 6 days or format and start again ?
suggestions ?
or should i just go vista64 at this time ?

I believe SP3 for XP is for the X86 version only. You need Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service packs for the 64 bit version.

I have automatic updates set to notify me but don't download. I got the notification that new updates were available (yellow shield) and clicked download for sp3. The yellow shield went away and nothing ever happened after that. Usually it comes back when the updates are ready to install. Later that same day I down loaded the SP3 ISO image from Microsoft downloads, burned it, and installed from the CD. That was yesterday, no problems so far.
