Alright, here's my problem. I've tried searching many places and haven't really been able to get an answer to help me. I hope someone here can change my luck. Ok, so, I got this WRT54GS just a few days ago. Here's my problem. I tried to install it using the CD that came with the router, to no avail. With everything the way it is now, I can connect to the internet. The problem is that during the CD installation, I can't get past the step where I have to detect the router.
Everythings connected properly, but it won't work. After searching for a bit, I found out that you could also install it without the CD using the web based utility. Unfortunately, when I tried to access 192.168.1.1 I get a, "Error loading page" rather than a password prompt. The main thing I want to use this for is Wifi for my Wii and DS, as well as something for my laptop to connect to. All 3 can find the router when I do a search for access point, all 3 can connect to the router. None of them can get on the internet from that point onwards though.
I'm using an ambit cable modem router with cable internet. My OS is Windows XP SP2. I don't know if either of these helps, but I figured it might be useful.
I've tried resetting several times, unfortunately to no avail. I'd like it if someone can help me out.
I'm not a complete idiot, so if you need a screenshot of anything I can get it, and I can follow directions pretty well, so anything to help is appreciated.

OK, try the following:
1. Reset your router by holding the reset button down for 30 seconds.
2. Turn off all of your equipment, pc, router and modem.
3. Turn on the router first and wait for about 1 minute.
4. Turn on the modem then wait for about 1 minute.
5. Turn on your pc, then try and log into the router by opening Internet Explorer and typing 192.168.1.1 username - blank password - admin.
6. Setup up your router manually, the best way, make sure to use WPA or WPA2 for your wireless security.

Just tried it again (I've tried what you suggested more than once, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try again)
When I logged back in, I didn't have a connection, and I wasn't able to get to the IP site to set it up manually.

Are you plugging the modem into the WAN port and the pc into ports 1,2,3 or 4?
:)
The sequence should be:
1. unplug all.
1. turn on modem & let synch w/ isp.
3. turn on router & let synch w/ modem.
4. turn on comp & let synch w/ router.

What type of connection are you hooking up? Make/model of modem.
Any PPPoE software on the computer?
Is your computers TCP/IP set to "Obtain Automatically"?
Correct..you don't need the CD that came with it..I never use the software CDs that come with routers....or any of the software that comes from the ISP.

Tried, unfortunately no new results.

Modem, an Ambit U10C018
Picture of it here, http://www.simplehelp.net/images/cable_modems/ambit_u10c018.gif
And I wasn't quite sure what PPPoE was, so I googled it. From the definition I found, I don't think so (Definition said something about dial up ethernet, and it's cable, if that's wrong let me know)
Yes, both IP and DNS are set to Obtain automatically.
As for the CD, when it couldn't detect it I just gave up on it entirely, and started trying to do it online, but was unable to do that either.

Cable modem..so no PPPoE...that's for DSL.
First..make sure your computers TCP/IP is set to obtain auto. By default..when plugged into your router with a patch cable..your PC will obtain a 192.168.1.100 address. Ensure your computer gets an address like this.
You should then be able to log onto router routers web admin page at 192.168.1.1..for cable internet..default settings are fine for the WAN/Internet connection type..which is also Obtain Auto/DHCP....the setting you use for cable.
Once you know your computer it setup correctly behind the router (by checking what I mentioned above) you can move onto the next step...set your router up with the cable modem.
Power off cable modem for at least several minutes.
Connect WAN/Internet port of router to cable modem.
Power on router
Power up cable modem....allow time to synch up (a minute or two)
Cycle the power on the router
Release/renew IP of computer (or just reboot if you don't know the ipconfig /renew command or XPs "repair" GUI function)
Once connected to the internet..you can lock down your router..change default admin password, rename your wireless SSID, setup the security of your wireless.
