Hi everyone! I've been having trouble with my router and modem. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it.

I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5101. For months it has been working perfectly well connecting to my computer through the USB port.

Recently I got a Linksys WRT54G router to use the internet on my laptop. To use it I have to use ethernet everywhere, not USB. So like the manual said I tested the connection by connecting my modem and computer with an ethernet cable.

Problem is, it doesn't work! All the lights come on the modem except for the PC activity one, and I get an error message (cable disconnected, or something along those lines.) I figured the problem was that my ethernet card or whatever must be broken, BUT if I connect the router to the computer via ethernet the computer detects it perfectly fine.

So I have the cables all connected where they should be. But the "PC Activity" light never comes on the modem, and the "Internet" light never comes on the router. Other than that all the lights are where they should be, and the computer is detecting the router and everything and I can go into the 192.168.1.1 router settings, but it doesn't actually let me connect to the internet.

Can anyone help? Sorry if this is all explained terribly, I don't really know what I'm talking about. :D Anyway, yeah, help please, and I'll clarify anything if it's needed!

Turn off cable modem for 5 minutes....so it will "forget" the MAC address of your computer. Connect your router to the cable modem using an ethernet cable...WAN/Internet port of the router. Power up router. About a minute later power up the cable modem. Let the cable modem "synch up" (takes about 1 minute)...detect the new device (your router)...learn the new devices MAC...and release an IP address to the router. Power cycle the router. Once router it back up..reboot your computer (or IPCONFIG /RENEW).

Should have internet now. Log into routers web admin..check "Status" section..you should see a public IP address on the WAN side.

Hi there! Thanks for the response. No luck, though!

I did everything as you said and nothing changed. PC activity light isn't coming on the modem, Internet light isn't coming on the router, and I can't connect.

In the router settings I'm getting

IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0

But doing an ipconfig /renew gets

IP Address: 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Is there something wrong? Am I looking in the wrong place? Anything you can do? Thanks!

I hope you don't mind the posting buuut...

I think I've got it working now! O: NO idea what I did, really. Maybe it was a problem with my ethernet cable? I found an old one laying around, and, just to test it out, switched the one I was using with it. One restart later and it seems to be working perfectly fine! Haven't tested the router just yet, buuuut I see no reason for why it SHOULDN'T work. Thanks for the help, anyway! :D
