I hope i've posted this in the right place - i've never used a forum before. I ran a speed test just now as i've been complaining to my ISP and getting nowhere i was going to change to a different company but thought i'd try this first. I am with Tiscali and pay for 8mg
- what do you think ?

I went to the traceroute - yahoo site - but cant find where i need to be - i couldn't find a uk link could you explain in a little more detail please. Sorry to be a pain.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Slightly high and uneven ping times at your modem in hop 1.

Turn off power to the modem and relocate it to a place at least a few feet away from ALL other electrical devices. Place it on the floor under the comp table if necessary. Make sure you do not coil up any lengths of signal or power cables.

Log into your modem and see what line speed it is getting.

An ISP can provide a top speed of 8 mbps, but this speed can only be achieved by those who are located within 1.2 km from their central office. The further from this distance, the lower the speed. See this graph:

Your modem shows a top speed of 7.6 mbps. Call your ISP and get them to check if they have uncapped your speed from your earlier subscription (before you upgraded).
