I had a FTP Server running on one computer a while back.
I had a Network Everyware (made by Linksys) router.. and everything
was running fine.. port forward 20 and 21.. no problems.

Now I have a Westel 6100 Router / Modem Wired combo,
one ethernet port on the Westell to a basic netgear gigabyte switch.
What confuses me.. is that my old configuration.. I use to be able to log
in to the FTP via my Dynamic I.P. address from my ISP. On the computer
that was running the FTP or another workstation on my LAN.

Now with this new configuration.. I can not. I can log into the FTP server
using the static I.P. of the FTP server nic card via the LAN,
but not via the Dynamic I.P. address from my ISP.

I hooked up my old analog modem and used Juno dial up.. and was able to
connect to the FTP's Dynamic I.P. address.. so I know it is working.
I'm just confused on why this new router / modem combo won't let me on.
I was thinking it has something to do with that Westell 6100 is more like
a "bridge" then a actual "router"? Does that sound right?
Tks!

You opened/forwarded the ports to your servers LAN IP again right?

The Westell units generally come pre-configured as a combo modem/router/gateway appliance..so its probably doing NAT. Can easily find out...does your PC have a private IP address? Can you log into a web admin?

Hey long time no here..

ya the westell has nat.. I can log in the router as a admin  and 21 and 20 are open.. i.p. address also points to ftp server (192.168.1.48) no internal firewall running on the ftp or other workstation. I can access the ftp server by punching in ftp://192.168.1.48 on the other workstation that I have.. but if I punch in the address that my isp gives me.. say ftp://71.34.123.76 I can not connect weather I try in in a browser or cmd line ftp..
I did try connecting via a dial up connection.. and no problems connecting to the FTP server, I'm just wondering how I could of done this with my old configuration.. and now I can't via this: ftp://71.34.123.76 ..
perplexing me for sure.. :)
The router / modem combo is 192.168.1.1

Have you tried from the outside? The Westell might not support loopback..so you may not be able to test from inside of it...going out..and back in. Surprised the NetworkEveryone router would have allowed loopback.

I believe those Westel's also have rulesets for the firewall. You may have to create a rule or edit a rule for ftp via the wan.

Yes! That.. is my line of thinking too..
Oh ya.. I have with a dial up account.. so I know that the FTP server is working.. I also configured both Ubuntu ProFTP and also Windows 2003 IIS 6.0 FTP and can connect to them from the outside... via a dial up ISP.

But ya... Maybe that is the case.. the Network Everyware router supports loopback and the Westell does not..

I'll have to dig out the Network Everyware router and hook it back up just to verify....
some things you just have to find out.. or it will drive you nuts.:D

Thanks Tony.. I'll take another look,
However, I already made a "service rule" for the FTP...
There is a firewall type setting that is for outbound connections.. almost like a software firewall per se.. but I have that turned off.
