Hello folks, brand new member here so this is my first post and thread.
may i also point out that i am generally ok with computers etc but not an expert.
Heres my query.
my brother is getting broadband in for the 1st time (hes a total novice).
his modem etc arrived yesterday.
he has a PS3 and wants to play online but wirelessly (due to the location of his PS3).
i have a spare wireless router complete with driver etc.
is it possible to connect the wireless router to his modem (using cable) to allow a wireless connection to be made.
is it as simple as that or am i missing something?
thanks in advance.
Yes, very simple, NO drivers needed. (the driver is usually if use USB instead of cat5)
Don't use USB for router, use cat5.
0. shut down computer.
1. unplug modem power.
2. disconnect cat5 from modem to comp.
3. plug cat5 from modem to router WAN (Internet) port.
4. connet comp to router LAN port using second cat5.
5. plug in modem power.
6. wait until modem synchronizes, usually 10-30 seconds.
7. plug in router power & wait until router synchs w/ modem.
8. boot computer.
You will now have Internet for the wired comp. Next, you'lll need to setup wifi in the router. This MUST be done using a wired comp.
0. access router control panel via Web browser, see router manual for the ip address.
1. enable wifi, NO security (WEP or WPA).
2. test wifi computers to see if have connection.
3. if all joy, setup wifi security on router (WEP or WPA).
4. restest wifi comps for connectivity.
note: WEP is not too secure, it can be compromised in about 2 minutes by someone external to your house using a linux laptop.

thanks folks. not got to the bottom of it yet but i have more info for you so hopefully you guys can help.
the broadband service is adsl into a small modem.
the wireless device i wish to use is a netgear 602 (i think this is a cable type and not adsl)
will it work plugging it straight in to the modem??

Sometimes yes..sometimes no.
These days...more and more ISPs are supplying combo modem/routers..gateway appliances. They run NAT. If this is the case..you want to add a wireless access point...not another wireless router. You don't want to have 2x routers...which will end up double NAT'ing..and possibly give you IP conflicts.
So..what make/modem "modem" do you have?

the wireless device is an access point (Netgear wg602)
the modem is a smartAX MT882 modem from the ISP (talktalk)
