Ddwrt Vpn

Hi, im kinda stumped. I am using linksys wrt54gl with ddwrt to vpn. Just a client server vpn not site to site. When I connect to the vpn I get put on a 255.255.255.255 network. The main network is on 255.255.255.0. Anyone know why the router is assigning me on this.255 network and not the same network as the internal network .0 ? I am undr the understanding that if I am not assigned onto the same network that I will not be able to access any of the shares on the machines at the office? Is there any way around this? what am I doing wrong? why am I being put on this 255 network instead of the .0 network that the internal lan is on?
