Got a HP DV4000 laptop and a WGR614v6 Router. The laptop will connect it doesn't always seem to want to but with a minute or two or a disable and renable of the adapter it will connect but only connect at 18mbps when its rated for 54. I've gone thru it a dozen times but I can't find anything that would make it slow and searches on the internet have turned up no help. Any one got an idea why it will only connect at such a slow rate?

Latest firmware on the router?
Latest drivers for the wireless NIC?
Using Windows to manage the wireless, or the NICs branded utility?

I have not updated the routers firmware but I have updated the drivers for the broadcom device in the laptop. and I am using Windows to manage the connection. I have a Netgear wireless adapter for another laptop that when i plug it in to the new laptop it will give me a connection speed of 54mbps but the internal broadcom device wont connect that high.

It's possible that one of the internal leads is disconnected (popped off). If you have easy access to the wlan card via a cover plate on bottom of laptop then open it & check the antenna leads. They should be very snug. I swapped my internal card for a preferred one and after snapping the leads I put a piece of elec tape over them.

Set the access point to use a different channel such as 11 or 1. These 2 channels have the least interference from microwaves in the air from other devices such as baby monitors, cordless phones, mw ovens, etc.

I've changed the channel and it seems to be running better. Right now it says my connection speed is at 2.0mbps. According to the speakeasy speed test I have a DL of 847kbps and UL 573kbps. Any other thoughts?

Realize that the download speed is governed by your isp. So, you could have a wifi router that promises 108 mbps and still download at 2 mbps. The wifi capable speed is for the lan only. Wifi in general will see speeds of approx half of the max throughput specified.
