My ISP just recently upgraded my modem to a 2Wire modem/router combo. The 2Wire does not transfer layer two protocols via wireless which I need.

I'd like to connect my Linksys 54G Wireless router (firmware v.8) to the 2Wire. Then I could use the Linksys for my wireless network.

The set up would be. Phone line to 2Wire Modem/Router combo. 2Wire to Computer A (via wire) and to Linksys router. Linksys router to computer B and C via wire + an Ximeta Netdisk. Three other computers would then connect to the wireless network which would be broadcast by Linksys.

I've seen some posts on this but they assume a greater level of knowledge then I possess. Could someone either provide me a link or a easy step by step process for achieving this?

You can set the 2Wire gateways to run as a pure bridge..allowing your Linksys to do the PPPoE/NAT. Google "how to use 2wire with linksys router"..you'll find a few hits on the steps. I don't do enough 2Wire units to have the steps memorized..have to stare at them for a few minutes.

I did find instructions but none of them worked. Eventually I found out that my ISP has locked the 2Wire so as to not allow users to put them into bridge mode.

I have managed to hook up the WRT54G to a LAN port on the 2Wire and disabled DHCP. All the computers are connected to the internet fine. The wireless computers connect to the Linksys wireless and I've turned off the 2Wire wireless. The only problem is the Ximeta netdrive. It now does not work with the wireless computers.

The reason I needed to add the WRT54G was because the 2Wire does not transfer layer two protocols wirelessly. The WRT54G does and I've tested it using an older modem and the WRT54G.

When I remove the old modem and insert the 2Wire the only change I make is turn off DHCP on the Linksys. The wireless computers are connecting to the Linksys' wireless broadcast so it should work but it doesn't.
