share local printer to 20 users in a domain

here's a rundown:


I have 8 winxp pro sp2 computers connected to a win2k3 domain with about 50 users in active directory.

1 computer has 1 printer and I want to share this printer throughout the domain so about 20 domain users can print off of this shared printer.

I'm on the computer that has the printer shared and I set the sharing and security settings on that shared printer by adding a certain "domain group with 20 users" to have full control of the printers. In which I'm part of this group.

In another computer I try to add that shared printer to that computer it so I can print off it. The problem is, it won't accept my domain login credentials, but it WILL accept the local administrator login of the computer that has the printer shared.

I went back to the computer that has the printer and instead of adding the whole domain group I only add my domain account to the sharing and security settings, to see if I can narrow the problem down.

I go back to that other computer to see if I can add it to my account and the computer with the shared printer still won't accept any domain login credentials just the local admin account that the shared printer is on.


Any ideas on how to make it so that people can type in their domain login credentials or no credentials at all to add the printer to their accounts?

I'd roll back the permissions to domain users....even go back to "Everyone".
Is the workstation correctly logging into the domain? Not a local login?

Ideally though...I'd get this printer networked on IP printing....grab it from the server..and share it from the server, have the server do its job.

The workstation is correctly logging into the domain. I can access shared drives provided from the domain server.

Problem solved:

I had to change a policy on the computer that was sharing the printer

secpol.msc>>Local policies>>User Rights Assignment>>Access this computer from the network

then I added the domain group that I wanted to access the printer. :thumb:
