I decided to upgrade from my DLink 802.11B router (using WEP encryption) to something faster and got a Linksys WRT300N with 802.11N capability.

I am running two new Dell laptops (Vista) with Intel ProWireless 3945ABG cards. Also, WPA2 Personal/AES security mode on the new Linksys.

The laptops seem sluggish and sure enough the network center is showing connection speeds at 2.2 Mbps up to 12 or 18mbps if I'm lucky. This is with them within a few feet of the router- excellent signal strength.

What can I tweak to get something closer to the speed I paid for out of this setup??

1. change to channel 11
2. set ap to use g mode because you don't have n mode adapters.

The maximum throughput you will ever see is approx 25 mbps on the LAN and the max connection rate will be approx 54 mbps, the max that your adapters can use.

With any wifi, the throughput will be approx one half of its max connection rate.

Thanks - great tip. I forgot about another older laptop with 802.11B card, I set the router to B/G mode (instead of "G" only as sugggested) and changed channel to 11, now showing connected at 54Mbps on the new machines.:thumb:

Realize this too...when a "b" client is connected, the access point will auto drop down to "b" mode for all clinets. So even if one laptop is b & one is g, both will have a max throughput of 11 mbps.
