I have a linksys wrt54g wireless router.

I have it working, but I cant get a password set on it for some reason. I turn on my laptop, and it connects automatically, never asking for a password. I live in an apt complex, so i need it to be password protected.

I went on the web based setup of the router, but I cant get the password working.

Anyone want to offer some advice on what i am doing wrong.

Thanks!

Try a reset to factory defaults....
Empty temp internet cache
Using IE?
Try upgrading the firmware
What is happening...it just stays with "admin" for the password?

You should use a wired connection to set the password. If you connect via wifi and change the password, you will not be able to login UNTIL you set up your wifi connection on your comp with the password, thuse the page in the router control panel will just "hang".

Seems you were talking about 2 different passwords here:

1) The password to access your router management page by using web browser. If you already forgot about this password, then reset the router back to factory default setting, and use default username/password to access it.

Linksys router default username: (leave it blank) password:admin

2) The WEP/WPA/WPA2 pre-shared key to connect to wireless network. you need to set this on router's wireless setting. Recommend you to use WPA2 encryption, this is the strongest encryption so far. Here are more wireless network security tips (http://www.home-network-help.com/wireless-network-security.html) to help you securing your wireless network.

Good luck....
