can i go wireless?

Excuse me if this is a daft question but i have no computer experience or knowledge whatsoever! I have recently bought a laptop running vista. It is wireless lan enabled and i have a wireless router. I have been trying to connect this up so my laptop is wireless with no success. Any information that i,ve managed to find on the web gives advice on how to connect the the laptop wirelessly to a desk top computer via the router. the trouble is i have no desktop or any other computer! it seems that a router enables you to connect more than 1 computer to the same network. my question is what if you only have 1 computer or in my case a laptop, can i still go wireless?

Yes. Just connect your modem to the wireless router. (or you may have a combo modem-wifi router).
