View Full Version : Unsatisfactory speeds and ping

My download rates are not near what they should be. My ping is also a long way from how it used to be on the same connection. I cannot figure out what is wrong.
I am on a wireless connection and using XP Pro SP1. AFAIK I am paying for 7 down and 512 up, but I will have to double check tomorrow. I tried a few different settings on the TCP optimizer, but they all either made it slower or kept it at the same speed. I believe I have them back to the default settings now.

Thanks for the reply trogers. Unfortunately the speed has dropped with those settings. Also, it now shows a different provider in the speed test, which is kind of odd. :rotfl:

Just to clarify, both of the tests in my last post were with your settings. I will get the new tracert in a little bit when I go back upstairs.
I ran the same speed test on my downstairs computer. This is on a hardline from the router, whereas the problem computer is on wireless. This was to the same server.

Thats what I want to see on the other computer. I probably cant get those speeds over the wireless, but I think it should still be faster than it is. I'll get that tracert for you in a sec.

Here's the new tracert, back on the bad computer with the bad connection. These are per your settings.
I did two, not really for any reason.

1 <1ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms 10.68.192.1
Your ping times at the router in hop 1 are considered high. Are both the router and modem being affected by interference from some nearby electrical devices, or interfering with each other?
Try turning power off the router and connect the comp directly to the modem and test.

The router and modem are still near some electronics, but my wireless access point is now isolated (my access point is not a router). I did pull the router and modem away from each other though. Previously, the modem, access point, and router were all next to each other. I'll remember not to do that again.

Use the settings I gave with TCP Optimizer and see if your speed gets to 6 mbps.

I've been using your settings since you posted them. After trying again, I wasn't able to get over 4Mbps. I noticed the connection speed slider in the TCP optimizer was still set to 3.5 so I moved it up to 7Mbps.

Sorry to dig up my old thread but...
I tried messing around with things again since I STILL havent been able to get the connection up here right. My buddy gave me a Winsock XP fix that I guess just resets the corresponding registry codes, but I didnt notice any difference. After that, I reset my settings with the TCP Optimizer to what you gave me here. After rebooting, I again didnt see a difference. Once I rebooted again, my AVG anti-virus started updating itself as soon as XP loaded. It was going fast, at damn near 500kb/s. After about 5 seconds, everything in the background and all the other stuff loaded, and then the download stopped. After a few seconds, it continued downloading again but struggled to get over 200kb/s.
So what could be running in the background that would limit my connection like this? I have used msconfig to stop most processes that I dont need at bootup, so I dont think its a program that I have installed that is doing this. Maybe its a setting somewhere in Windows? I dont know. Any help would again be appreciated.

Boot Windows into 'Safe Mode with networking' (press F5 during booting and select mode) and test speed.
If there is a huge speed difference, post your Hijackthis log.
