I have been trying to help someone who wants to network 2 XP computers peer-to-peer. I have done this many times, including my home network, but I am seeing something really strange in this instance.

Both have XP Home, both are hard-wired to a Linksys Router. Both are in the same Workgroup. Both have Sharing turned on and the otion checked that says allow users to change files on this computer. Also, both have shares created at the root of C and also in a few other folders.

Here's the problem:

Computer A can see the share on Computer B listed in My Network Places, and also under the Workgroup, but when you click on one of the shares, you get the following message: " \\name of computer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions".

Computer B can see the share on Computer A listed in My Network Places, and also under the Workgroup, and when you click on one of the shares, it opens up and shows the documents just fine.

It should be noted, Computer A can access and print to a shared printer on Computer B.

Also, both computers only had the Windows Firewall, which I disabled, but that did not help the issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

To fully disable the firewall:
Control Panel > Windows Firewall > uncheck EVERYTHING in ALL tabs & disable the firewall.
Then use Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > set Windows Firewall to Stopped and Disabled.

If fail to disable the firewall via Services then it will still load and be running (alg.exe).

Can a mod move this to the regular NETWORKING FORUM? I didn't notice that one when I posted, sorry.
