View Full Version : Upload speed is way down?

Hi,
I'm using Verizon as my ISP and I have DSL. I'm using a Westell 6100 modem. Here's the problem: I use RapidShare a lot and I've notice that when I upload a 100MB file, it takes 24 hours! Before, it never took so long. I thought it was my modem so Verizon sent me a new one and I still had the same uploading issue. The technician went over some tests with me and found that the modem wasn't at fault. It was something in Windows XP.
So, I found this program called Winsockxpfix and it made some changes to the registry. The program is supposed to fix changes made by registry cleaners. I do use Registry Mechanic and the registry fixer in CC Cleaner once a week or so. I guess those two programs altered something. I can't say for sure so I've stopped using them. After using Winsockxpfix, I used Tweak Master to make some registry changes to speed up my Internet browsing. I'd have to say that worked but I'm still having uploading issues.
So my sage forum members, what tests do you need from me or what other information can I offer to get this behind me. I can't seem to find a solution and other have tried to help me in other forums. It's a complete mystery.

What speed did you pay your ISP to give you?
Post your TCP Analyzer report.

I paid Verizon to give me 3Mbits download speed and I forget the upload. Several tests show my upload at 253kb/s on average.
Okay, I know you're going to roll your eyes at this one but where can I find this TCP analyzer? I Googled it but I didn't see anything I could download. Could you offer me a link of some kind? Sorry about that.

The link to the TCP Analyzer is at the bottom left of our main webpage.

Go to the main page of this site, you'll find it somewhere near the bottom on the lefthand side. :)

I'm sure you know that the speed is always slower for UP than Down.
Here in the UK the speed you pay for is seldom the speed you get, and mostly we're offered 1Mbps, 2Mbps or 'Up - to' 8Mbps... I've never seen 3Mbps.
That said, you may be interested in these typical figures from the UK.
Rough Speed Guide
ADSL Speed Typical Download Typical Upload
512Kbps 460 Kbps 200-240 Kbps
1Mbps 920 Kbps 200-240 Kbps
2Mbps 1840 Kbps 200-240 Kbps
8Mbps 7150 Kbps 400-750 Kbps

I spoke to a technician about that and he said the same thing. I guess I'm so close that I don't mind the difference. But that upload speed is absolutely driving me insane and I don't want to reformat just to fix a problem. There has to be a better way than that.

And just in case you're feeling hard done by... :)
I'm paying for 'up-to' 8Mbps and am currently getting:-
135 Kbps Down (yes K) and
448Kbps up. :(

Post a new TCP Analyzer report. We need to see what MTU value you have to recommend a TCP Window value.

The reason I did not set MTU to 1492 in the TCP Optimizer is that your comp will change it to 1484.
Thus I used 1500 as MTU in anticipation that your comp's MTU will change to 1492. But TCP Window should be set to 63888.
I suspect your use of Tweak Master may be actively limiting adjustments by TCP Optimizer. Uninstall Tweak Master and clean your registry with CCleaner. Then reboot comp and use TCP Optimizer only.

Your TCP settings are now correct and download speed at optimum. Upload speed is low probably due to the very high ping time of 595ms.
Do a tracert to www.yahoo.com and post.

Signal problem seems to be at hop 4 which is within your ISP's network.
Ping times are normal at your end from hop 1 to 3.
Complain to your ISP and show them the problematic router at IP address 130.81.17.177
Get them to do a line test to your number.

Okay, I just got off the phone with Verizon. We were on for an hour trying to figure this problem out and I told him about the hop 4 but he said, after doing so many tests, that it was someting on my end. The modem shows that I have an upload speed of 768kb/s and the tests show I'm uploading at 108!
When we booted into Safe Mode with Networking, the upload speed improved but it wasn't a 100%. I've run multiple antispyware programs and found nothing. I checked my hijackthis log and found nothing. This is a mystery. What do you think I should do now?

Call up Hijackthis and fix the items that have 'file missing'
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 (AVP) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0\avp.exe" -r (file missing)
One unusual observation is seen in your log - you have 2 entries for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0\avp.exe and one of them has missing file. It may be that this antivirus program has been loaded into the process twice. Running 2 antivirus programs causes slowdown.

Make the following adjustment. I earlier assumed your ISP given upload speed at 384 kbps. It actually is 768 kbps and thus the following adjustment is required.
Enter only the following fields in Cablenut while leaving all others a blank:
DefaultReceiveWindow - 63888
DefaultSendWindow - 98304

I deleted those items you suggested. The avp.exe is normal according the people at Kaspersky. One is for protection and the other is for the interface. In some instances, even three processes is normal but I don't have that.
I did the adjustments via Cablenut and here is the new TCP results:

Multiple entries of a program in Process is normal, but the register would show differing exe or dll files. Like your Comodo - cmdagent.exe and CPF.exe
Yours have avp.exe registered twice.

I did an experiment. I opened Windows Task Manager and found the two avp.exe processes. I shut down the program and both processes disappeared. I can only conclude that they're part of the program or someone has come up with a sneaky way of implementing some spyware.
How do my test results look?

Uninstall your antivirus, flush the registry and fix any remaining entries found with Hijackthis.
Reboot comp and make a fresh install of the antivirus.

Uninstalled antivirus, firewall, and spyware and did another online speed test. Still the same. I reinstalled antivirus but changed my firewall to Online Armor. I also deleted whatever I could in hijackthis. I went ahead a stopped some services and ran a speed test each time but still no good.
I guess you're about to throw in the towel and I don't blame you. This is a total mystery. Bigtime.

Try this NDT and click the 'Statistics' button when testing is completed and post the pop-up report:

You said you get better upload speed when in Windows Safe Mode. How much better? Save a Hijackthis log when in this mode and compare with the log of normal mode.

Here are the test results. They are in two parts because the option to copy wasn't available to me. It's weird how Opera allowed my to run the test but IE didn't. It wouldn't show the "start" buttion.
The speed increase I got in Safe Mode was negligible. Instead of 102 I got 110 in upload speed.

That wasn't my intention... we all have to start somewhere.

NDT shows no signal problem along the connection line.
I suspect the problem of low upload speed is an error in ATM setting by your ISP. Call them to test your line at your end with their laptop.

I called them today because I got someone to loan me their laptop and they tested the speed. Everything was normal as in terms of upload speed. So, it seems that it's my computer after all.
Unfortunately, whatever is doing the blockage is still a mystery. So, I see I have no choice but to format. That's half a weekend right there, but what can be done.
