Hi guys,

I found out my (USB) wireless connection speed was 1/3 of the UTP cable connection. I counted by simply downloading a 21.5 Mb file (the Skype 3.6 file :-), which gave around 157KB/sec on UTP and 52KB/sec on wireless for transfer rate. Time wise 2 minutes versus 7 minutes).

I then looked around for this phenomenum and found this (great!) site/forum. I found a reference to the tcp optimizer tool. After downloading that and starting it I discovered that it actually tweaks registry settings which made me a bit hesitant on using it. As a ´just experienced user´ I am not confident in solving that level of (possible) Windows issues. But when I found that the program gives you an option of making a backup of the current settings, AND since I was working on my old (separate) desktop I did give it a try. I did only 2 things: run the test for optimum broadbandspeed (which did give the correct 1500kpbs). Then I pushed the slider in the first tab to that value and chose ´optimum setting´. After rebooting the pc I did another download of the same file and I got a transfer rate of 166KB/sec...

Very, very good!!

Before doing the same on my laptop (which I use through UTP or USB wireless) I will work for a while on this old desktop first.

Now after this long introduction I have some questions as well:

1. Has anyone found any problems or issues after the settings were adjusted by the program? I mean, although this simple download test gave great results, I have no idea what all the adjusted settings may or may not do in other areas...

2. In the next few days I will buy a new (replacement) desktop which will be a Vista machine. Would this program be usefull under Vista as well??

3. BTW: out of curiosity: How many people got the same issue (wireless USB speed only a 1/3 of the UTP cable connection)??

Cheers,
Pete
