laptop takinf forever to connect to the wireless network

My compaq laptop is taking a long time to connect to the wireless network.
It used to connect in seconds, not it is several minutes.

I have all the up to date drivers instlled for the broadcom wireless adapter in the laptop. I have 3 other laptops connected to the same wireless network that connect right away.
Once connected I am fine, it just takes forever to connect.

Any ideas regarding what to look for?
I cleaned up te registry
i cleaned up start up
I have plenty of free RAM
I have all the latest XP updates and drivers installed.
I have exactly the same laptop in another room that has no problems, I checked all the settings on that broadcom adapter and they match the settings on the one that is very slow to connect.

1. don't use the broadcom connection software, or other 3rd party wifi software.
2. use Windows built in wireless connection service.
3. change channel of AP, probably getting an overlapping/interfering signal.

From my personal experience...

If you are seeing the windows wireless icon in the taskbar, with the yellow dot scrolling for a long period of time (i.e. its getting an IP). i found that it could be due to a wireless key being incorrectly typed in. Check the key again...

The DHCP server on your router won't give your laptop an IP if the key is wrong.

Have you changed it recently?

I also found that issues can arise if you are using an encryption method that isn't supported by the laptop. If its an old laptop it might not be compatible with WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal. For legacy use WEP encryption on your router/access point, although not secure at all!!

Final note, the more walls your signal has to go through, greatly reduces your signal quality... and check for neighbours possible interference, i.e. using the same channel as you...
