I have residental PPPoE dsl service with a user ID and password and
for the sake of this disussion, there is no gateway. My PC if
connected to the VZ modem.

Do I have to log in *before* DHCP happens or do I have to get an IP
assigned via DHCP before the login happens?

FWIW, this is Verizon in NYC.

It's a question that's been bugging me.

I believe their system assigns you an IP address as soon as the modem passes
them the MAC address of the device attached to it, in this case your
Ethernet card's MAC address.

Then they ask you or your system for the login and password assigned to you
in order to enable your access to/through their internet gateway.
