im getting bad ping rates while playing online. I'm using Charter communications which im paying for cable internet at 10mb download and 1mb upload. my system is an amd fx57 running windows xp pro

Try a different game server.

if i did a who is, and found out the company name. could i call them to let them know? would it do any good? thanks

Better to inform your game server and let them deal with the problem as you are not a subscriber to that ISP.

QUICK QUESTION: Just so i can understand what i'm looking at. when i did the above tracert the 1st hop is my router? the 2nd hop is at the cable box in my yard? and the 3rd hop is a switch probably at the cable company?

is that how it is read? please help me to understand better. thanks.

1st hop is the router as seen from the IP address of 192.168.xxx.xxx

2nd hop is the modem with IP address of 10.147.200.1

3rd hop is the ISP's switch with your public WAN IP address of 172.23.xxx.xxx

thanks you are teaching me :) My friend is getting ***** in his 2nd hop, which means his cable modem. Is the modem bad? Because he keeps loosing connections. thanks again for your help.

I think what you mean is his hop 2 is timed out. This usually happens because a firewall is blocking pings. He will need to turn off his firewall, either in his comp or in the router.

Tell your friend to log into the modem and check signal power levels and compare them with those in this thread:
