View Full Version : Router not working
I am trying to connect 2 computers to the internet. The computer that is connected to the router by an ethernet cable is in a building behind the house. I cannot get the computer online nor can Linksys or the cable company. I am using their version of "lite" which is 20 times faster than dial-up. I can change to "high speed" but I am not sure if that will solve the problem. I think the 2nd computer is too far from the router (even though it is wired) to pickup a signal. Will a signal booster work in this case? Am I better off with high speed? Am I taking the wrong road??? Help...

How many feet from the router is the pc? How is the "other" computer connected to the router?

Thanks for responding. The ethernet cable is somewhere between 75 to 100 feet; however, there is about 50 feet in distance. The other computer is connected to the modem with a cable from the router to the back of the computer. I don't know that distance is the issue. Linksys and TW cable says everything is working properly. We have pinged and are gettin replies, sometimes...I'm not a tech but I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing. All cables are in place. I am running windows 2000 on the computer connected to the modem and XP on the one connected to the router. I know that shouldn't be an issue. I've never used a signal booster so I didn't know if that might be an option...Any suggestions would be appreciated...
Your good on the distance.
Let me see if i understand correctly: "The other computer is connected to the modem with a cable from the router to the back of the computer."
ISP--->Cable Modem----PC--->Router---->PC
"I am running windows 2000 on the computer connected to the modem and XP on the one connected to the router."
This part doesn't make since to me. You should have the cable modem connected to the "WAN" port of the router. All other pc's connected to the LAN ports of the router. Do this by step. Then, shut the cable modem and router off. Connect everything; dont turn them on yet. First turn the cable modem on. Once it has finished going thru its start up process turn the router on.
One more question. How is the cable to the XP machine ran and thru what? Is it out in the open? Ran along electrical wires? Be descriptive.

Are you able to ping your router, and get replies? Test connection to router..once good..move onto making sure router is connected to your ISP properly.
The cable that is connected to the XP machine is ran under the house, buried under concrete (patio), up the side of a building, through the roof and inside the building to the back of the XP machine. We are guessing less than 100 feet of cable. The first cable was too short so he bought a connector and added another 25 feet. I bought a new etherfast adapter yesterday thinking it wasn't pushing enough power. It will not get a connection and it IS working properly or so the device manager says. I hooked it back to the original adapter. I get a very weak signal. I am able to get online for a brief minute or so. Most of the time the page won't load. The status loads to 4 or 5 bars and stops. Time Warner and Linksys are both useless. Is it possible that the cable may be frayed but still in good enough condition to work? I know all is hooked up properly or I wouldn't be getting on and then losing connection. Thanks again for taking the time to answer me an putting up with the book I just typed....
