Is it possible to use a switch to share an internet connection from a cable modem? what else do i need if not?

If you have multiple IP addresses from your ISP..yes you can. However..you don't get hardware firewall protection.
If you have a standard single IP account..use a broadband router. Provides hardware firewall protection also for your network.

thanks much.. i have a safecom modem/router aswell.. can i just go from the modem to the modem/router then to the switch then use the switch to share the internet?

You can try, but remember to configure nothing on modem setting on that modem/router. I didn't try this setup before, but maybe it will work. If fails, then go to get a simple router that can just cause you around USD $20.

If it doesnt have a wan port to plug into your cablemodem, it isnt gonna give you the desired affects.

If your modem is a combo modem/router...you do not need..actually..you do not even want to, add another router. Generally you just want to have 1x router running NAT on a network..you want to avoid having multiple routers/multiple NAT devices. Just add your switch to your primary modem/router (gateway appliance)
