Insanely slow T1 download speeds HELP!

I have broadband through Mediacom ISP. Usually I average download speed at 900-1mb a second. I installed SP2, didnt like it so restored my computer to before I installed it, now my download speed is TERRIBLE. Now when I download stuff, (from multiple sites ie. FileFront Download.com etc) Its starts at about 300k then slowly drops down lower and lower until its at like 40k. WTF? Im pretty upset about this considering I usually could download huge files in a matter of seconds. I dont know much about computer tweaking (ie Active X and al that ****) So tell me what information to post or give suggestions. PLS HELP!

Im thinking this could be virus related. I ran an in depth system analysis using NOD32, it pulled up 16 problems and clamed to fix them all. Can you recommend a good virus scanner? Are there any other system settings I can post for you to look at like HiJackThis or w/e?

I just did a test download of a yahoo game. 41mb file downloaded at 1000kb in 51 seconds. Fantastic, everything seems to be in order again! Thanks for the help guys!

It may be a virus or could be malware.

Search Google, download, update and scan with the following:

SpyBot
Lavasoft Ad-Aware

NOD32 is by far the best... but it requires a little more effort in setup.

Google "NOD32 blackviper" and just follow the instructions from blackviper on setting it up! :thumb:

But I agree with Trogers that it sounds as if you have junk running sucking up some bandwidth but also keep in mind that sometimes there is just regular net traffic you have to deal with vs just you on a open road alone.

BlackViper did the windows services tweaking guide years ago..different guy.

Without service pack 2....who knows what issues his PC may have, SP2 fixed a lot of security bugs.

And what size T-1 is this? A lot of people say they "Have a T-1"...it's often a fractional T, or a T that's split with voice...with a % left for data. And if it's a T, often business, so how many other PCs on there, servers with public services that may have QoS setup to prioritize for them, site to site VPN tunnels with a % of the bandwidth dedicated to them, etc.

your problem is pretty easy.....

many websites dont allow speeds over 200-300kb/s and some even as low as 25kb/s some 2mb/s.

you cannot and should not expect to get full maxed speed out of every site.

also the 40kb/s could be an ISP problem prolly peak time?
there are days when out of nowhere your ISP will simply crap out even if for 10 years you've had no problems.

keep an eye on your PINGS if you get the problem again.

do a ping when your connection is fine to say FILEFRONT, then if the problem resurface do a ping again to FILEFRONT ....check for difference, you might have increased ping = slower download.
