I've been having some hardware dissaperances, and figured my IRQ's were rotten. They didnt look bad at first, then I enabled PnP OS and now Win2K has assigned 5 devices per 1 IRQ. Anyhow.. looking at this, should I edit this for better performance?

You can turn off some options that you don't need in the BIOS to free up some more IRQ's. Read this (http://www.rojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/BIOS_Guide/BIOS_Guide_Index.htm) site very carefully and you will see what you can disable. Do you need both Com ports? Do you have devices on both the primary and secondary IDE channels?
After some card juggling and BIOS tweaking this is what I have.

Win2K does a better job with IRQ's then other Microsoft op-systems. You may not notice any improvement after tweaking the IRQ's anyway.

Damn! I need help configuring the IRQ's.. can u help RoundEye??
Hey isnt irq 11 the bridge or route through to the higher irqs?
I cant remember all of them, but one of them 11 0r 9 or something is a bridge that allows the use of higher irqs. Forgive me, I dont have a book and I am thinking off the top of my head....

I can help. Post questions here or look for me on ICQ. Wednesday is bike night (http://www.mcguirespitstop.com/bikenight00.html), so if it doesn't rain, I'm riding. Thursday I have school at night. So it may be a while before I have time for an ICQ session. I'll keep an eye on this thread though. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

OK, finished lunch, one more quick post before going back to work.
Check your mobo specs for shared slots. My mobo shares slot one with the AGP slot. Whatever device I put in slot one shares an IRQ with the video card. So I used slots two and three, they are not shared with any other slot.
Go into your BIOS and turn off one of your serial ports if you are not using dial-up. If you turn off both serial ports you will lose both IRQ's three and four, so leave one enabled.
Reboot and see if any IRQ's were reassigned. If not you may have to go into the BIOS again and enable Reset configuration data. I've had my comp reboot with a black screen after resetting the configuration data though. If this happens to you reboot again in the safe mode, and set the display to 16 colors at the lowest resolution. I think it's a video conflict, not certain though.
Here's a start, let me know what happens.

My sons did the same thing. As Roundeye said do some card changing and some bios tweaking. This should sovle your proublem. If it don't as long as their not conflicting with each other you should be ok. GoodLuck!

Sorry I forgot to mention if you have the time. try uninstalling you pc cards software from the computer. Then shut it down and remove them. Then reinstall them one at a time in a different slot that you had them in. As you install them one at atime add the software then. This if you don't want to mess with bios. Good Luck! This sometimes works to.

The problem was the ACPI assignment (see IRQ5) This would not allow a diffrent configuration without a reinstall of Windows. I attempted to disable this support in the BIOS to release the IRQ, however Windows decided, it didnt want to boot back. I recieved the blue "hardware stop" message instructing me to uninstall the new hardware. I also tried disabling PnP OS, per Microsoft instructions, and it didnt help one bit. I even tried reseting my bios, and even tried the repair installation, and it still wouldn't work. I had to format last night. Right now, im at odds under which OS to install with this motherboard, and my device configurations. I really need solid USB support... so I dont know what Im going to do yet.. sucks.
btw, the IRQ assignment is normal under Win2K, as RoundEye suggested, it does better with IRQ sharing than the other OS'

Messiah, if you like Win2K don't give up on it just yet. Remember when you first started using computers, how foreign Win95/98 looked?
It did take me quite a few card swaps and reformats to get my IRQ's the way they are. I did it just to learn how and got plenty pissed my self many times. I learned the hard way by just trying and trying till I got it the way I wanted. It may take you a while but I will help however I can. The odd part is once I got it set up in the BIOS and the cards in the right slots, Win98SE uses the same IRQ's as Win2K. After I got the IRQ's set right, I even reformatted one more time to see if they would change and they didn't http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
Look at these pics of Win98SE, same machine with a dual boot.

Somebody at Dell or Gateway probably gets paid some big $$$$$ to sit around and set up computers to check for conflicts before production starts on a new model. You are just doing that "research" since you are building your own computer.
Happy Tweaking
