I went to a Cisco seminar today and someone was running what I believe to be Solaris on a dell laptop. I though Solaris was only for other processors (not X86 based) like that DEC processor.

Does anyone know how much or where to get solaris for X86??

I keep hearing that it is the number 1 email server OS. (hotmail is run on the Solaris platform)

Any help would be appreciated...

I can confirm Solaris 2.6 runs on an x86 for sure. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

I run Solaris 8 on a k6-2 500 at home. Runs ok but nothing like it does on Sun HW. The OS is optimized to run on their hardware. It is an excellent way to learn the OS, however.

I got the full media pack (answerbook, staroffice, oracle 8i) for $40 I think. You can download older versions for free...

The prices on hw are coming down a little...check out the sunstore link off the homepage.

An afterthought...check out http://www.solariscentral.org

They have a lot of freeware and a pretty supportive community. LXRUN allows the running of all(so they say) linux software under solaris.
