I just dont understand why people are so obsessed with overclocking. I have an amd550 with 128megs of ram. I recently put in a new gigabyte mobo too. A nieghbor of mine has a anthon 900(or it's a 950) and my computer is almost as fast as his. The only real tweaks I apply is to turn the minsps up to 12, virtual cache to 300 min/max, as a network server, turn the sound muffer off on my maxtor and partition my two hard drives into four parts.
1-windows and programs I use
2-games and things I dont plan on keeping
3-songs
4-mpegs, divx and hotline
I also put a controller card in. I bought a promise ata66 because promise makes the best. I did this becuase I had two hard drives on the same channel before and they had to share. Now, my main maxtor sits alone. 80ribbon ata66 with a real seek time of 10.6 m/s and a burst of 58.7 megs/s.

I used to run ie 5.5, but I have found that ie 5.0 is faster and cleaner. I only upgrade after 5.0 starts to get a little bit corrupt due to decay.

I check my start up folder about once a week to make sure nothing has been added without my knowledge. It's amazing how many times I'll find something surprising. I have a soundblaster 64 awe sound card which is a isa. It sounds wonderful on my computer and a pci card takes more a hit on resources then a pci soundcard. When I turn on my computer, it takes just barely over a minute to totally boot up. I always have an even 90% system resources free.

I run the following programs on startup:
*norton's antivirus
*zone alarm... without the note-keeping feature
*logitic mouse driver
*the drivers for my ati all in wonder

i can easily do the following at the same time: run five differant hotline client programs all downloading, aol 4.0, 2 or 3 ie5.0 windows open and office's word 2000. I might even be able to do a little more then that, but I've never had a reason to try.

I have also found the tweaks for cable on here to not work well with my computer. I installed the recommeded patch and I noticed a speed slowdown. Thankfully, they also have an undo patch. I have maintained a 250 kb/s from a hotline server from sweden. Just a simple home user. I can clear 450 from a server such as microsoft or realplayer.

I know people who waste thier money on o/c for a couple of mhz and then burn out thier chips. I can see buying a celeron 600 and getting 800. That's an improvement. It's people who try and squeeze 50-100mhz for what? On my old motherboard, I used to run my 550 at 500 and it ran more stable.

just some of my many thoughts on the subject.

You answer is really simple. It's just human nature to want to tweak things.

Computers are just a small part of that.

I've been tweaking an old pickup for quite sometime now. When I see a tweak that might work for a computer, I try it. I also overclock given I can keep my processer cool enough.

Why? Maybe because we can? Or maybe bragging rights? Who knows, but it's kinda fun. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think the answer is simple, everyone wants something for nothing.
If i can buy a p3550e and O/C it to an 800 and don't have to spend the extra money it would cost for the p3800, why not??
I only had to buy a better heatsink and thats it, it's been running sweet for a year now.

I like your veiw. Mainly because if you over clock and your board don't support it. You just cut your computers life in half. Plus you end up spending money any way buying all the stuff you need to keep it cooled down. Plus if even one chip on the board can't take it. Your out buying a new board and chip or a new computer. This my opinion. Those who want to overclock thats your choice. No offense I just don't think it's worth the time when I had to work hard to get what I got now. I want to have it for a while.
