Only when playing (or trying two) a movie in media player on Win2k my system just reboots. It was fine a few days ago and now it does this. I have downloaded Inoculate IT and run a check but found nothing.Prior to that I had no AV for about 5 days because I upgraded to win2k and my norton was only 4 95,95, me. I know its not a heat prob.
Anyone have any ideas why it might be restarting ONLY when trying to play a vid????

Ive now turned off the auto reboot on error in Win2k which has given me an error message as follows.
*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xc000.......blah blah
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Begining dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.

Cheers

OK its been 2 weeks now and Im getting desperate. I really hope someone else here has had some similar error(s) in win2k and can give me some idea where to start troubleshooting. This will get my post to the top for one last try at some help from you gracious people.

My IRQ 11 is heavily shared by 5 devices if that gives any indication as to what may be causing this. I wont get into too much more detail with specs unless of course someone thinks they can help!

Thanks team

As I posted in a couple of other threads on this issue, this normally has to do with drivers.

Have you changed any lately?

Check your video and sound card drivers first if it's a MPEG or something similar doing it.

I havent changed any drivers lately as such but I have installed service pack 1 and shortly after service pack 2 as well. Im thinking I installed pack 1 at around the same time I started having trouble and wonder if its at all possible that it could be the cause???
If so how do I uninstall service pack 1 having not selected to install the necessary backup files to do so, I know...... Duh!!

This is the only change I can think of thats been made to my sys since the trouble started. If anyone strongly thinks this could be the culprit, and my only option is to format because Im such a dumb ass, then I'll try it.

Other than this stupid problem Win2k has been a dream OS. Heres hoping I can get it sorted!!

Well, SP1 CAN overwrite current drivers, if I'm not mistaken - SP2 overwrites your VIA drivers, if you have them.

We'll need some computer specs to go on any further. Post what kind of hardware you got... If you have a VIA or 800+ chipset, reinstall the drivers for them. List driver versions/dates for your sound and video cards...

Ive now reinstalled my VIA drivers but this hasnt helped. Im using the latest detonator drivers for my TNT 2 and as far as I know my other drivers are as up to date as possible.
Im going to try reassigning my IRQs as Im currently sharing IRQ 11 with 5 devices including sound card, NIC, AGP and modem which I figure cant be good.

Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have?

We had an old finicky Dell around our office that when we used memory (PC133 CAS2) that wasn't "to their specs" that it would cause this error as well... Dunno why I didn't think of this sooner.

Might be worth a shot, if you are tweaking your ram or have multiple DIMMs to back the settings off or to remove a DIMM and see what happens.

Minvaren, I have 256 Mb of pc133 (cas2)Legend Ram.
I haven't added any CDRW devices and burning software lately.

Do you guys think having 5 devices sharing IRQ 11 is at all related to the problem?

According to the MSDN knowledge base, most KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED errors occur with CDRW devices and burning software. Have you added anything like that lately?

Here is the MSDN knowledge base page (http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp).

Hey Nightowl, I assume your also running Win2k pro. If so have you installed Service pack 1 and or 2, and how are your IRQs configured?????????

Im hoping its either one of these things that causing this error!

My system is as follows:
Duron 800 not o/clocked as yet
BCM mobo VIA KT 133
256Mb pc 133
20 Gig ATA 100
TNT 2 M64

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this

My problem how now been isolated folks. From advice in another post, I instaled a standard PC driver instead of ACPI and let windows reinstall all my drivers. This gave every device an IRQ of its own and also fixed my problem with the KMODE ERROR when playing vids.......until I tried to run unreal T and got an openGL error.
I then reinstalled the detonator 3 drivers for my TNT 2 and Unreal was again happy but of course this brought back the KMODE error when playing vids.

So is it the detonator 3 drivers for Win2k or the IRQ settings or both???

Im gonna try installing some other drivers that work with both Unreal and vids.

So nightowl if you have the detonator3 drivers with Win2k I expect thats also your problem.

If anyone can shed some light on why my IRQs might have been heavily shared in the first place it would be appreciated. Am I best to have ACPI installed or stick with what Ive done. This area is a little grey for me???
