Hi,

I would also like to tweak my computer. Any help would be much appreciated. My specs are Xp Pro, Dual core Amd @ 1.8, and 2 gb of Ram. I have a siemens speedstream 4100 modem and a D-link DGL 4300 router. The provider is DSL yahoo with service from AT&T. The speed advertised is 6000 download and 768 upload. Along with that I had a technician from AT&T hook up a direct data line so there should not be any problems with land lines.

Your post shows 2 problems.

Your MTU at 1400 is off. DSL PPPoE should be 1492. Log into your router and make sure MTU (and MRU) is set to 1492 and reboot router to take effect.

Your tracert shows high ping times at hop 1 and 2. Ensure your router and modem are placed a few feet apart, or both of them are being affected by some strong electromagnetic interference from some other electrical device, maybe a speaker or cordless phone?

Try the following with TCP Optimizer:

General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 127776
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - checked
Timestamps - uncheck

Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
LocalPriority - 1
Host Priority - 1
DNSPriority - 1
NetbtPriority - 1
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 80
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect

The first one I had changed because I read it in another post somewhere.

The second one the modem and the router were too close to each other. How did you read the tracert to know that they were too close?

Here are my new settings.

Trogers, Thanks for the time you have taken to read my posts.

Your tracert now shows normal ping times at hop 1 and 2. When a tracert shows ping times outside of the norm for the router or modem, the cause is commonly due to electromagnetic interference or outdated firmware. If there are irregular ping times at the hop after the modem, the cause may be due to a bad splitter or wiring.

These are observations drawn from the experiences of members who posted in this forum.
