View Full Version : how to improve my pings

Hi,

I have just joined Sky Broadband (ADSL) and am consistently getting 80ms around pings to almost all UK sites I connect to (never lower than 80ms).

On other forums, when people in the UK and in the same city (but not on the same local exchange) have tried the same sites, they get around 40ms pings.

I am using windows XP SP2.
My ADSL router is Super Wireless ADSL Router DG834GT (firmware version
V1.02.28) and I get speeds a lot better than I expected to get compared to my previous provider PIPEX.

DownStream Connection Speed 3552 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 416 kbps

The only problem is the pings.
Is there anything I can do to get normal pings?

I think the problem is my ISP at the local exchange (hop 2 below)

Changing the settings using TCP Optimizer didn't make any difference so have reverted back to the windows default.

However, my wireless router was near a logitect cordless mouse and keyboard USB adapter and my cordless phone so I have moved it as far away as possible from these devices onto the floor and that appears to have given me my best ping yet amazingly.

(I have the wireless router connected to my PC via ethernet as my PC does not have wireless capability)

I may now try the settings you gave using TCP Optimizer again and see if that helps further.

Ping times at hop 2 (at the modem) still a little high. They should be equal or less than those in hop 3.

Have changed settings again to those you suggested using TPC Analyser

On one game server, I was getting ping of around 75-80ms which is major improvement anyway (was getting 90-100ms before moving my modem).

Yeah, hop 2 is giving my some cause for concern.
I though hop 1 was my modem and hop 2 was my local exchange though, my local exchange is named South Wales Roath which corresponds to swrth in hop 2?

So anything I can do to improve hop 2?

Hop 1 has a LAN IP address belonging to the router.

Hop 2 is the 1st WAN address belonging to the modem and you should 'X' out part of it to avoid hackers.

Sigh, back up to the pings of my original post again.

Later in the day, web browser was very slow browsing net and pings were timing out with data loss so switched off router and back on and pings back to original post.

I think your present firmware is typed wrongly. After checking at NetGear's site, it should be ver 1.01.28. Their latest is ver 1.02.04.

See this link: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834GT.asp

Check with SKY if this latest firmware can be used with their system.
