View Full Version : Cat3 or Cat5e for DSL
I just got dsl and I seem to have a problem with the wiring since I get full speed at the NID box and crap in the house. Gonna run a new lines from the box and was wondering if I should just use regular cat3 or can I use cat5e and pair up the wires into a RJ-11 connector. Also whats the normal price per ft. for cat3/cat5e at somewhere like homedepot.

When I rebuild my house...I use 5e and 6 for all my phone lines. Yeah a bit overkill..but... :D.
At the very least...for optimal performance...having all new phone lines run from the street to your house, and all throughout your house, will usually help minimize issues.
Yes, cat3 is more than enough, but you should get a good RJ-11 connector with firm crimping and if there is any joint in the middle they should done in a professional way (loose joints cause a lot of trouble with dsl).
Also, always keep telephone lines away from electrical wiring specially for long distance routing.

I guess I'll just use cat3 for now since I have a spool of it. Thanks for the info.
