View Full Version : Connecting 2 LANs
i have 2 LANs at 2 locations id like to connect together on 2 seperate IPs. i understand a VPN setup can do this? i found instructions on how to setup a VPN but i think i may be having some routing problems. im running behind 2 routers. 1 linksys wrt54g and 1 netgear wgr614. can anyone help me in the correct router settings?

Best to utilize routers that support "router to router VPN connections"..let the routers connect both networks.
is there anyway i can set it up using port forwarding? if so is port 1723 & 47 the only ones i need to open?

If you have a server...yes you can set it up using Windows built in PPTP. You'd want to open/forward port 1723 and point it to the LAN IP of the machine that's running RRAS.
You don't open/forward port 47.....when you see IP 47 mentioned in regards to PPTP VPN..it means it's a certain type of IP..type 47...GRE...which a firewall must be told to allow to pass through NAT unmolested. Most routers have an option to allow PPTP and IPSec/L2P passthrough..this is what it means.
However, you'll have much better performance, security, and peace of mind....running IPSec tunnels using routers that support it. I have a lot of clients that run tunnels between sites...I never use software for tunnels...I always take the hardware approach.
