I have installed and am in the process of configuring Exchange server 2003 on my home doamin. It is loaded on a Compaq ML530 configured with RAID 5. I have a block of static IP's from my ISP. Presently the IP of the server is 10.x.x.x, and I use RRAS so that it can access the internet (which accually works). I am going to get a domain name from godady.com, and want to set up email server so that I can use it to send and receive email. My ISP allows me to set up servers. Should I assign the server a static public IP? or can I keep it in the internal IP range and have it forwarded via RRAS? I know that I need to config the MX record, but I recall someone saying something about needing to configure reverse DNS. Do I need to do that also? If so how do I go about doing it?

Regards,

Personally I don't like a server (any computer for that matter) on a public IP address....I like them behind a hardware firewall (NAT). And I only open/forward the ports necessary for whatever services I need...mail will be port 25. Outlook web access 443 if you want to check your mail from the road.

Whoever handles your DNSl, or any SMTP smarthost that you'd use, would do the revDNS.
